For this project, I am tasked to design a mobile app that solves a real need in a person’s day-to-day life. The Unscripted app case study to design an onboarding flow. Overall, my goal is to:
- Define what we are trying to solve.
- Understand and identify the target users.
- Define potential problems.
- Generate new insights from user interviews and heuristic evaluations of similar services in the market.
- Design a suitable solution.
As a researcher I want to understand how people are spending their free time and how much they’re satisfied with the experience
- Uncover past activity experiences of couples that will shape the way want to discover future activities
- Take a holistic approach in understanding how activities shape people’s experiences and lives and based on those experiences, how they would want to improve their experiences in the future.
5 user interviews will be conducted from found participants through online methods (zoom, video chat.) to accommodate COVID-19 restrictions and concerns. Key takeaways:
- Users have trouble making up their mind and/or agreeing on activities.
- 60% of users said that they do not plan ahead, and prefer to do things spur of the moment.
- Users tended to enjoy both outdoor and indoor activities, depending on differing daily factors.
- 77.7% of users have some sort of role in their activity researching and planning process.
A competitor analysis was conducted on Meetup and Groupon:
In order to stand out from these products, while still meeting the user need, Unscripted should:
- Include “stay at home” or pandemic based recommendations, for people who want to have fun, and try something new, but not leave their house.
- Minimize the onboarding process as much as possible for very fast application usage.
- Add interactive and fun components to the personalization process, in order to make data input less of a chore. In addition, make this personalization skippable.
The final 3 features that were voted to be included were:
1. Share Function to allow users to instantly send recommendations to others.
2. User Questionnaire, a way of personalization of recommendations, in an interactive and efficient way.
3. Refresh function, allowing users to receive “infinite” recommendations to ensure they find one they like.
These features were chosen to address these specific user concerns:
- Difficulty planning/agreeing with others.
- Need for group activity accommodation.
- Explore activities that they love.
- Save research time and effort.
- Provide a quick and easy process.
- Allow for spontaneous planning.
- Allow users to try new things.
Additional features that were added for app flow and usability
- Save recommendation function.
5 Usability test were conducted on this prototype in order to test:
- If users could successfully create an account.
- Complete the questionnaire.
- Refresh a recommendation.
- Save a recommendation.
These tasks were based on key app features, and were determined to be important to overall app flow and understanding.
Key Takeaways from Low - Fidelity Usability Testing:
- 100% of users were able to create an account
- 90% of users were able to find and complete the user questionnaire
- 40% of users were able to efficiently refresh a recommendation
- 80% of users were able to share a recommendation
The UI was designed around the key features of the application, allowing for consistency and keeping the overall UI as user friendly as possible.
Overall the onboarding experience as well as initial features allows users a way to get back to enjoying their leisure time, within their own unique schedule. Users can use Unscripted to alleviate their stress and time spent researching and choosing activities, especially for groups of people.
